Today our NatureCoast Peace and Justice Coalition held its first antiwar demonstration after a six month hiatus due to the 2006 elections. The Coalition has sponsored over 80 antiwar demonstrations over the past four years.
11 of us held signs in Spring Hill (Hernando County) near the Sears store intersection on state road 50 and Mariner blvd. The Tampa Tribune's Hernado Today newspaper recorded the event with a reporter and a photographer there for over an hour.
Our signs covered themes of "Bring the Troops Home," "End the War!," to "Jail Bush," "Impeach Bush," to "X-Mas Wish List: Throw President Bush in Jail." One asked: "Iraq War Exit Strategy?", and another asked "Are We Safer Now?"
Tombstones, banners, signs and placards were carried, held and leaned on.
The passersby and public's response was predominantly postive and supportive to us protesters, but there were still those in opposition and supportive of the Iraq War.
The reporter questioned why we were still protesting since it seemed that the new congress was going to address the war issue. Several protesters corrected the reporter and indicated a healthy skepticism of the majority Democratic controlled U.S. House of Representatives. It will be business as usual they indicated.
Those in attendance included Fred Ulmer, Joseph Murphy, Ginger Wielk, Wayne and Judy Lee, Peggy and Juan Moore, Suzzane Touchton, Jaime Hendry, Hans Lohmann and myself.
