ANTIWAR DEMONSTRATION THIS SATURDAY (May 19th) AT WEEKI WACHEE PARK INTERSECTION, 10 AM TO 12 NOON
3,400 U.S. Soldiers Dead; Iraq War to cost one to two trillion dollars;
In Recent Debate, Republican Presidential Candidates support Use of Torture and Deny America's Interventions in Middle East for 10 Years Has Caused Threat to Nation's Security
Spring Hill, Florida: Wednesday, May 16, 2007: Antiwar protestors will demonstrate against the Iraq War this coming Saturday morning, May 19th, from 10 AM to 12 noon, at its traditional location of U.S. Highway 19 (Commercial Way) and State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd.) in Weeki Wachee, Hernando County, Florida.
The Naturecoast Coalition for Peace and Justice will sponsor the Saturday rally in its continuation of encouraging the public to pressure their congressional and U.S. Senatorial representatives to stop the war funding as well as setting a short deadline for pulling the American troops, private security forces and American reconstruction corporations out of Iraq.
The war has claimed the lives of more than 3,400 U.S. troops and has cost the nation over $390 billion since March 19, 2003. Congress is also expected to providr more than $90 billion additional monies next week to pay for the war through Sept. 30, 2007, the end of the this fiscal year---thus bringing the war costs so far to $480 billion. The entire war, according to american economists in a New York Times article today, is expected to cost the nation between $1.2 to $2 trillion.
The war burden has imposed a gas tax on American families (to the benefit of oil-producing countries like Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia). At the start of 2003, a barrel of oil was selling for $30. Since then, the average price has been about $50. This will add an additional $150 billion to the cost of the war. The local antiwar Naturecoast coalition will continue to highlight gasoline prices which have surged more than 20 cents in recent weeks to a record U.S. average of $3.10 per gallon, surpassing the previous record of $3.07 per gallon set in September 2005, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Anti-war Democrats in the U.S. Senate failed today in an attempt to cut off funds for the Iraq war on Wednesday, a lopsided bipartisan vote that masked growing impatience within both political partiies, both of whom have refused to take a firm stand in ending the war.
In Republican debate last night the majority of presidential candidates supported the U.S. use of torture and deny that America's Middle East interventions have created hostility, hatred, anger and a real threat to America's safety.
