Though Obama’s State of the Union Address on 1/27/10 received all of the hype, his Q & A session with House Republicans two days later was a much more meaningful, constructive communication. I was delighted to see Candidate Obama behind the podium once more.
The President “entered the lion’s den” with a willingness to listen, but also a firm resolution to cut through the blame-game tactics. He admitted to, and took responsibility for failures that he felt were legitimate criticisms. But he chastised representatives for making false claims and self-promoting statements when they should have been engaging in an earnest dialogue based on questions. Most importantly, Obama told hard truths.
The biggest takeaway was that the tone of American political discourse must change. Mr. Obama called for an end to “slash & burn” statements. He posited that demonizing the other party puts politicians in a precarious position when called to the table to negotiate.
“You’ve given yourselves very little room to work in a bipartisan fashion because you’ve been telling your constituents that ‘this guy is doing all kinds of crazy stuff that’s going to destroy America.’…This is not just on your side by the way. This is part of what’s happened to our politics.”
After watching the Q&A I thought to myself: only the most rabid republican could see this and still believe that Obama is a radical leftist.
Or maybe conservatives are so out of touch with liberals that they’re unaware just how far the pendulum swings. Dennis Kucinich is radical. Brian Moore is radical. Barack Obama is moderate. And frankly, he’s a bit too conservative on certain issues (defense spending, “clean coal,” etc.) for my taste.
But I know people who can’t look at, or listen to, Obama without completely shutting down. And these are educated, thoughtful people! They’re not bigots (at least not consciously). During the State of the Union address, one of my friends posted this as his status: “Obama, blah, blah, blah, Spend Trillions, blah, blah, blah.” And later in the evening he conjured up Billy Madison saying: “Obama…what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.”
I have to admit that I’ve acted in the same self-righteous manner. Recently, in fact. I was so annoyed with my friend for airing his frustration publicly that I fired off an equally asinine retort. Then we battled it out, on Facebook mind you, in a “debate” that changed neither of our opinions and left both of us pissed off.
Has politics always been so black and white? So mutually exclusive? As a society do we really believe that if one person, party, or idea is good, then the other must be bad?
That’s certainly not what we aspire to, or how we think of ourselves. But blatant social inequalities prove that this type of primitive logic still weighs in on our minds. One researcher calls this phenomenon “The Hidden Brain.”
Maybe once we unlock the secrets of the subconscious we’ll finally be able to see our elected officials in shades of gray. Then it will be easier to spot the difference between those who are authentic, and those who are merely trying to score public approval points. Until that day, I propose that we all take a moment to reflect on the true source of our frustration when we encounter an idea we don’t like.

Do you believe Barack Obama was born in the United States, or not?
36% of all respondents said “no”. 42% of respondents said “yes”. 22% said they were “not sure”. It’s a good thing that 42% number is as high as it is, because it wasn’t always; especially during the 2008 Election (before Sen. John McCain discounted it, with no help from his running mate).
For the record, his birth certificate can be seen here and his birth announcement can be seen here. These are easily found in any Google search, and have been available for the better part of 2 years.
The fact that 36% of people ignore this absolute fact (and 39% of “self-identified” Republican Men), and another 22% aren’t “sure”, is mind-numbing and staggering in the level of idiocy required to believe it. What can’t be quantified is if this is a product of Republican “message”, or if this is a product of people’s unwillingness to believe basic and proven facts simply because the subject of those facts disagree with their political positions.
Do you think Barack Obama is a socialist?
63% of respondents said “yes”. 21% said “no”. Another 16% weren’t “sure”. So, 79% of all “self-identified” Republicans aren’t completely convinced that the President of the United States isn’t a Socialist. Not only has the President not done anything Socialist, or anything that Republicans haven’t already done themselves (remember, TARP was signed into law by President Bush); but the reality is that President Obama’s positions generally don’t differ much from the previous President.
He voted to re-authorize the USA PATRIOT Act and the warrantless wiretapping provisions in the most recent FISA bill. He ran to the right of Sen. McCain concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during the Presidential Campaign and has governed as such while in office.
Progressives and Leftists have decried this President as “just another Neo-Con”. Brian Moore, who ran for President on the Socialist Ticket in 2008 said that “calling (President) Obama a ‘Socialist’ is an insult to Socialists.” The fact that “President Obama” and “Socialist” can be uttered in the same sentence with a straight face is simply beyond comprehension.
Do you believe Barack Obama wants the terrorists to win?
Amongst all respondents, 24% said “yes”, 43% said “no”, and 33% said they weren’t “sure”. Let’s, for a moment, forget the fact that 67% of people in this poll essentially just accused the President of treason by giving aid and comfort to the enemy. What in heaven’s name would President Obama gain by the terrorists “winning”?
There is no apparent answer to that question that can be easily determined. It must be stated that there’s a school of thought that on the basis of this answer alone, the terrorists have already “won”. A terrorist’s goal is to do one thing: to terrorize, that is, to instill fear in their target.
This poll answer, along with several others, could be construed as clear evidence of people who have been instilled with “fear”, and gravitate toward anything that swears to protect them. Perhaps the Republicans are really the ones who want the terrorists to “win”? It would certainly garner them more broad-based support.
Fear/Authoritarianism Is Not The Answer
Honor in our country will be regained when fairness is applied to everyone and when everyone is allowed to participate in the decision-making process of living and working and not being told what to do all the time by an authoritarian figure.
Fear is not the answer, doctor. Mutual respect and sharing the rights and rewards of our society, along with the responsibilities that come with such benefits, will make people act in a more respectful and honest way.
Right now, they see the hypocrisy of our society, the unfairness, the inequities and the abuse, and they react in different ways, many times, out of frustration or anger. They rebel, protest, dissent, fight, lie, steal and cheat, because they see those who have the rewards, privileges and inherited riches conduct themselves in the same way, but under the radar screen of social conduct.
There are many unwritten rules in our society that are condoned and embraced, despite their evil results and dishonest actions.

Eyewitnesses saw the Hernando County Sheriff’s helicopter hover three feet above the water and six feet from the fugitive kayaker, with the rotors blowing his hat off. And the pilot admitted the propeller winds could have flipped the fugitive’s 8-foot kayak into the air! The eyewitnesses also saw the copter churn up the water as the fugitive surfaced twice then disappeared in a shallow lake.
Reports on the Coast Guard rescue in the Gulf, stated that the [32-foot] boat had sunk so low that “getting close with the helicopter might kick up waves that could pitch the men into the sea.”
Instead, a rescue swimmer was lowered into the water by the Coast Guard to take the men away from the boat, where they were hauled up to the helicopter one by one in a basket.
Conclusion: The Hernando County Sheriff’s Department unnecessarily killed the fleeing fugitive. A simple motor boat pursuit or waiting for him to row his kayak off the lake would have easily saved the person’s life and the sheriff department’s extreme embarrassment over its incompetence and unnecessary actions.

Socialist Calls for Radical Change in America

Brian’s Letter-to-Editor: “Radical change needed for all”
The recent letter (Nov. 26, 2009) saying better days are ahead and the letter writer defending himself as a blind optimist reminds one of what most critics say of those of us who are promoting socialism in America. They say we are naive, grasping at windmills and unrealistic of how the world operates.
However, the shoe now fits on the other foot. What the writer says is true, that life spans are longer, homes are bigger, food is more affordable and more education available. But that is not true for everyone, and each day fewer and fewer Americans have such a luxury or such a privilege.
I am not thankful for where our country is today, or where we, as a nation, are going. I can understand the writer’s limited and false perspective, though, because he is relatively secure in his retired lifestyle. He must have multiple pensions, excellent health insurance and probably has never experienced the insecurity of looking for a job, much less losing gainful employment after many years of steady work.
I too am optimistic, but my optimism is not blind, it is based on a belief that by radically altering our economic system we will be able to survive as a nation and for more people (i.e. the entire population) to share in the benefits of full health, housing, employment and education, all as a right, and not as an economic privilege.

Brian’s Letter Opposes Business Request To Rollback Impact Fees
Now that the real estate, home builders, construction sectors and banking industry have created the present economic crisis, they now want schools and taxpayers to pay for it in the form of reducing or eliminating local impact fees, cutting public spending and laying off workers in both the public and private sectors.
Citizens have to say “no” to the private sector and chamber of commerce, and to demand that the Hernando County Commissioners not consider such drastic actions on rolling back impact fees for the residential, industrial and commercial sectors in its upcoming meetings or taking such legislative actions.
We citizens and taxpayers are being forced to swallow the bitter medicine of an economic crisis that has created staggering waste and misery in our society and worldwide. There are now more than 18 million unoccupied homes in the United States alone. Yet millions of average Americans are being forced to give up their homes to banks or to the US government via Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.
Economists argue a recovery requires ordinary people’s spending to go up, not down. But the stimulus has not done this. It only has fattened the pockets of Wall Street, select banks and given bonuses to corporate executives. And the proposed actions on local impact fees contribute to this same downward cycle.
Both the Democratic and Republican political parties, and their elected officeholders, are still in the pockets of the banks and real estate interests who were so responsible for the insane policy of driving up housing prices at all costs.
Now the business sector, and their bought and paid for politicians, want us to tighten our belts in order for these same private sector industries, along with manufacturers, to lighten their financial load “for the good of the country.” After all, HBA President Jeff West claims in Mr. Bate’s article that they will “… help stabilize home prices, property tax revenue and put people back to work.” What hypocrisy and arrogance, and with such selfish motives!
The only way the construction industry will be improved and saved in Hernando County, and nationwide, is if we urge our national government to reallocate monies normally spent on unnecessary or wasteful industries such as the military, nuclear, fossil fuel, mass weaponry and space industries.
We need to radically alter our economic system to cause a more constructive re-distribution of monies for the re-building of our society and in the delivery of social services by addressing our crumbling infrastructure, rural farms and small businesses; and by radically creating more expanded national healthc are, housing and educational systems.
